Both versions of this classic dress feature four delicate neck darts, Ellis, who gets some more feminine shaping from bust darts, is waisted, with set in sleeves and inseam side pockets. Hattie has a lined bodice, dropped waist and bold patch pockets.

Suitable for linen or light wools, light to medium weight woven cottons such as drill or sanded canvas. For our samples we made Ellis in 8oz washed denim and our Goodnight laundered linen. Hattie is made in an Irish checked linen.

Spark - I would make this in the neon neppy

This is a multi-size paper pattern in an envelope, including sizes 8 – 18. Both have 1.5cm seam allowances apart from the neck which has a 1cm seam allowance and these are included in the pattern.

The pattern piece for the skirt is quite wide so we have only specified fabrics that are 120cm (47 inches). You can use narrower fabric on the following sizes:

For Ellis sizes 8 & 10 in 112cm wide fabric.

For Hattie sizes 8,10 & 12 in 112cm wide fabric.

For Hattie size 8 in 106cm wide fabric.

A word from Merchant & Mills

"Our patterns are developed by Carolyn Denham over several months and go through many tweaks and changes before being deemed fit for your consumption. After approving the final cut, the pattern is then graded before production begins. You will find very few fastenings and no unnecessary difficulty when working from our patterns which start life with an idea and a domestic sewing machine. In our experience, the classic, simple designs that Carolyn favours, place emphasis on the cut and silhouette whilst intentionally avoiding detailing and fastenings which can make even the best dress look homemade."
