Intro To Improv: Where Do I Start? Weekend Workshop with Carolyn Murphy
In this two day introductory course, you will learn the basics of improvisational fabric piecing and chart a new path in your practice. Discover your own launching point to improv through sketching, paper collage, fabric collage, and the development of "meditative spontaneity", a crucial skill needed to let go of expectations and discover your unique creative voice.
Using a design wall to develop our work, we'll give our ideas the space and consideration they need, Here, there are no mistakes, only new directions, unexplored opportunities, and the playful question: "What If...?"
At the end of this course, you will come away with an improvised fabric composition of your own design, along with a solid foundation for your future improv practice.
Carolyn Murphy - Carolyn is a renowned Toronto based Textile Artist. She has shown her pieces, and sold her work Internationally. We've included her bio here in the images, but we urge you to check out her website and Instagram Feed.

Who should take this class? This is a great opportunity for makers who have been following patterns, but are keen to expand their approach to textile arts and who will benefit from a guided start.

Supply List - You will get a detailed list of materials to bring in advance of the class but you can anticipate the following
We will provide -
- Sewing machines
- Cutting mats
- Iron and Ironing boards
- Design walls
You will be asked to bring the following*
- 1.5 yards white cotton
1.5 yards black cotton
1 yard of ONE colour of your choice - Scissors – for fabric and paper
- Snips
- Rotary cutter – be sure to have a sharp, new blade
- Seam ripper
- Acrylic ruler – very optional!
- Pins
- Tailor’s chalk
- Thread – medium grey or other neutral colour
- Camera – phone cameras are perfect
* we have sewing kits available to borrow for use during the class if you don't have any of these things.
