When you make your own hand quilting frames, you can create exactly the frame dimensions you want, and easily work with pin-basted quilts. With this space-saving, minimalist set-up, you will have the flexibility to hand quilt at home, even if you don’t have a lot of space. In the first class you'll make your quilt frame and in the second class, you'll learn how to hand quilt on the frame. You'll be quilting with perle cotton.  Hand quilting with perle cotton will create gorgeous texture with a bolder stitch, and will add a truly “made by hand” beauty to your quilts, large or small.

Supply List - You will get a detailed email a couple weeks ahead of the class. But, you can anticipate the following

Materials for DIY quilt frame:

  • A set of art-supply store “regular” (not “gallery”) stretcher bars for canvas to make a 16 x 20” (or similar size) frame OR an inexpensive readymade 16 x 20” stretched artist’s canvas (canvas will be discarded) 
  • Batting (any kind, scraps are perfect- otherwise 0.5m or a “crib” or “craft sized” packaged batting)
  • Fabric (0.5m) to cover the stretcher bars (not too thick- quilt-weight cotton or cotton/linen blend is good)
  • Staple gun + staples (if you already have them- a few will be on hand to share)
  • Scissors 

Materials for the hand quilting sample

  • basted quilt or practice quilt sandwich (at least 24 x 24” or larger)
  • thimble 
  • quilter’s straight pins (long, yellow-ball headed pins)
  • perle cotton, size 8 or 12
  • Chenille needles, size 24
  • small snips
  • washout fabric marker and/or white chalk wheel marker or chalk pencil (for light and dark fabrics- will be discussed in class)

Note - we are capping the class at 6 participants. If we have less than 2 participants, we will cancel the class and refund your full purchase price. Otherwise, workshops are non-refundable. If you cancel with at least a week's notice, we will give you a store credit. If you find you can't make it, with less than one week's notice, you are welcome to send someone in your place.
