Postage Stamp Improv - Two Part Workshop with Johanna Masko
Are you Improv curious? Here's your chance to get super comfortable...
A “Postage Stamp” quilt is a traditional design, made entirely of very small 1” squares. In this class, we will dive into small scale improv patchwork, creating a dialog between the “traditional” and the fully “improvisational” that combines the best of each. Our Postage Stamp technique will use variants of strip-piecing for complexity, without set measurements or repetitious outcomes. Johanna will share her Art School approach to working in quantity while we create dynamic, exuberant quilt blocks.
Johanna will also show you how to create improv pieced letters so you can spell words, names, or make a statement.

Supply List - You will get a detailed email a couple weeks ahead of the class but in the meantime, assume you will need to bring your sewing kit (thread, fabric snips, etc.) ideally a 6"x12" ruler and a 6"x24" ruler, rotary cutter, and lots of fat quarters (12 or more). All of these are available to purchase in the store and we have sewing kits available to borrow for the duration of the class.
Your fabrics can be variants of a single colour, or a limited palette of three or four or five colours you like together, or a wide open selection of colours. For value/contrast, you can use fabrics of similar value for a more blended look (for example, using mostly dark fabrics, etc…) or you could also use a range of lights, mediums and darks. Johanna likes to work with a more blended look, using a limited palette rather than the entire colour wheel. You may use solids, prints, or a combination of both.
Note - we are capping the class at 6 participants. If we have less than 2 participants, we will cancel the class and refund your full purchase price. Otherwise, workshops are non-refundable. If you cancel with at least a week's notice, we will give you a store credit. If you find you can't make it, with less than one week's notice, you are welcome to send someone in your place.
